IBS – Irritable Bowel Syndrome

ibs IBS is characterized by alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation and can be quite painful, and sudden.  IBS is not associated with any disease thus it is a problem of food and diet.  IBS is a fairly modern problem that has become increasingly more common as the quality of our food has deteriorated.  You should fix this problem because it can lead to more serious results including ulcerated colitis and cancer.  You are the only one who can fix it, too.

Start with the food you are eating.  You may want to eliminate all wheat initially (flour, bread, crackers, cereals) until you get your IBS under control.  Eliminate all sugar (use honey instead) as sugar causes major inflammation in your body.  Refer to the book Eat Right 4 Your Type for a list of foods that are especially beneficial to you—and avoid the ones that act like poison in your body.  For you own blood type, some really good foods can be like poison to you.  You must find out what these are and avoid them.  They are listed in the book mentioned above.

Give yourself some help with supplementation.  Your digestive process is not working well right now so take a digestive enzyme with each meal.  This helps the food break down in your stomach so that your body can use its nutrients.  You may need a probiotic.   This will put the beneficial bacteria back in your colon; you need these bacteria for digestion, nutrition absorption and for immunity.  If you’ve battled IBS for a while you’ve probably gained weight, not because you’re eating too much but because your body isn’t absorbing the nutrients it needs.  Your brain knows it’s not getting nutrition so it goes into its “starving” mode and saves everything to fat.  While you’re solving your problem with IBS, take a good vitamin and mineral supplement.  Get your brain out of the “starving” mode.

During this healing process, you can use Cascara Sagrada capsules as a gentle laxative as needed.  Put some fiber into your diet with Psyllium Seed or Fenugreek Seed capsules (and plenty of water).  Eat whole foods for more fiber.  For example, cook old fashioned oatmeal instead of instant oatmeal.  Apple pectin is useful for both diarrhea and constipation.  Use it.
