Marshmallow Root

| February 2, 2013

marshmallowMarshmallow root is healing and soothing to external skin conditions and internal mucous membranes.  It forms a mucilage–a slippery coating that is very soothing and that has some pain relieving properties.  When would you want to take the capsule?  Sore throat, lung congestion, kidneys or bladder hurt.  Any soft internal tissue that feels irritated will benefit from this herb.  If you grow this plant it makes a nice 4′ addition to your flower border.  It looks somewhat like a miniature hollyhock.  The added advantage of having it in your garden is that the leaves develop their mucilaginous property after the plant has bloomed.  A tea can be made with the leaves being soaked in cold water.
