Lemon Balm (aka Melissa) is a soothing herb that has been used for hundreds of years as a calming remedy especially to relieve anxiety. One reason it’s been around so long is it is very easy to grow. A relative of mint (no mint flavor), it has a light, lemony taste. It is so easy to grow it can become a weed and crowd out other plants. Just grow it in a pot or an isolated area such as next to a sidewalk. The essential oil of lemon balm is frequently used in aromatherapy and massage for its calming properties. It has one other secret. An extract of lemon balm will reduce a cold sore or genital herpes outbreak by half and continued use will lessen future outbreaks. It can also be taken internally as a sleep aid.
