Calamus Root

calamusCalamus root is also known as sweet flag and blue flag. Sweet flag is used as an aromatic braid which is burned for fragrance. Blue flag, calamus root, is used as a fixative for essential oils in potpourri. Also, it is said, if used as a tea it makes smoking nauseating so someone trying to quit might want it as an aid. My main use for calamus root was as a fixative for essential oils in potpourri. The root soaks up the oils and holds them in place longer than if the oils were used alone. I would take a small jar (with lid), add the calamus root and oils, put the lid on, and let it soak a day or 2 before adding flowers.
